These are the freezer faults we handle most across Fort Worth β standalone chest and upright freezers as well as refrigerator freezer compartments. We quote the exact cost before any work begins, with the $69 diagnostic applied to the repair.
Food softening, ice cream going soft. Usually a failed evaporator fan, a defrost system fault letting ice block airflow, or dirty condenser coils making the whole system work too hard. We find which one before anything gets replaced.
Heavy frost on the walls or a wall of ice behind the back panel means the defrost system has stopped working β defrost heater, defrost thermostat, or the control timing. It's a standard repair and one of our most common freezer calls.
A unit that never cycles off is either losing cold through a bad door gasket, fighting a dirty condenser, or has a defrost fault forcing it to work against its own ice. All three shorten compressor life, so it's worth catching early.
Chest and upright standalone freezers β start relay, thermostat, condenser fan and door seal are the usual suspects. These units are simple, durable and almost always worth repairing.
Rapid clicking from the back usually means a start relay that can't get the compressor going. A buzzing fan is often ice contact. Catching either early can save the compressor.
Food partially thawing and refreezing. Points at a failing thermostat, control board, or a damper stuck open on combination units.
A blocked defrost drain backs up and overflows. We clear the drain line and correct the icing that caused it, rather than just mopping up.
Worn or torn gasket, or a door that's sagged out of alignment. A freezer that can't seal will frost up repeatedly no matter what else you fix.

Seeing a code or alarm? We diagnose the fault behind it rather than clearing it and hoping.
Yes β standalone chest freezers, upright freezers and garage freezers, as well as the freezer side of refrigerators. Standalone units are mechanically simple and usually very economical to repair.
No. Heavy frost buildup, especially a sheet of ice behind the rear panel, means the automatic defrost system has failed β typically the defrost heater or thermostat. Manually defrosting it will help for a few weeks and then it comes right back. The underlying fault is repairable.
0Β°F (about -18Β°C) is the standard target. If yours sits at 10β20Β°F, food loses quality and the compressor runs far longer than it should. That's a fault worth diagnosing, not something to live with.
On most units both compartments are cooled by one evaporator in the freezer, with air ducted forward to the fridge. So a blocked damper, a failed circulation fan, or an iced evaporator will starve the fridge while the freezer still feels cold. It's a common pattern and we diagnose it regularly.
Usually yes. Freezers have far fewer components than a modern refrigerator, parts are inexpensive, and a well-maintained unit runs 15β20 years. We'll tell you honestly if a repair doesn't add up for your unit.
